3. Pompeii (Feb 21, 2014)
Budget: $130 million
Predicted Box Office: $90 million
Why It's Going To Bomb: I have a perverse desire to see this film flop, because giving Paul W.S. Anderson this amount of money should be a crime against humanity. The next-most expensive film Anderson has directed was The Three Musketeers, which cost $75 million and was a modest success, whereas the Resident Evil films have all floated between the $30-65 million zone, and to his credit, have all turned considerable financial profits. In not taking on an established franchise and instead depicting the real-life eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in Pompeii, however, Anderson has a lot to prove, and given how his earlier non-franchise efforts - Soldier and Event Horizon - failed at the box office, why should we expect much different from such a blatant gamble?
