4. Thanos - Avengers: Infinity War
The Villain: Thanos is one of the biggest, baddest characters in the history of comic book lore, bestowed with insane levels of strength and stamina, capable of projecting huge amounts of energy, using telepathy, being ultra-proficient in close-quarters combat and boasting a super-genius intellect to boot. Oh, and he can teleport, time travel and enter alternate universes, so he's basically the definition of the "OP" Big Bad comic book villain. Why He'll Be Ruined: Expectation is the key problem here. Thanos was first introduced into the MCU in 2012's The Avengers, and ever since he's been slowly built up as the villain to end all villains, who will presumably finally show up in a significant, meaningful way in the two Infinity War movies in 2018 and 2019. By that point, though, fans are going to be so eager to see The Avengers destroy Thanos that nothing less than an incredible, jaw-dropping portrayal will do: Thanos needs to cause major problems for the team by killing off at least a few of them, and his destruction needs to be a major, epoch-making event in the MCU. It can't just be the flippant destruction of another big bad "because magic" like in Guardians Of The Galaxy: it really needs to mean something to make the most of the character. Sure, Josh Brolin's depiction looks on-point and the visual rendition of Thanos is terrific, but with so much promise to live up to, it wouldn't be a big surprise if Thanos was ultimately rather underwhelming.
