10 Upcoming DC Movies And The Comics They'll Adapt
6. Shazam 2
Comics: Shazam (2018-)
While Shazam (the real Captain Marvel, fight me) is a character with a history dating back to the 1940s, due to publishing and copyright issues that led to a twenty year absence from comics, he lacks any defining or iconic storylines. Not to say that the original Whiz Comics weren’t great, but if you ask even the most hardcore of comic book fans to name an iconic Shazam storyline, they’d most likely say Kingdom Come, which is more of a Superman story than anything else.
Enter Geoff Johns, while writing the New 52 Justice League title Geoff Johns set out to reintroduce the character to new readers by having the Shazam star as a backup feature in the New 52 Justice League comics. Johns revamped the character and his mythos for the modern age which would become the basis for 2019’s Shazam film.
Just a few months earlier in 2018 we saw the relaunch of the Shazam title, once again written by Johns, this time focused on expanding upon the groundwork laid in the New 52 Justice League backup features, by rooting the character in his more fantastical and magical aspects.
Given the lack of iconic storylines from the character’s past, and the strong influence of the New 52 backup feature stories, it's a safe bet that Shazam 2 is going to pull from Geoff Johns’s phenomenal ongoing series since it's a great continuation of his New 52 work, and matches the new light hearted tone that Warner Bros. and DC seem to be steering their movies towards.
