Comics: DC Rebirth Aquaman

Unlike Shazam who has had a shaky publication history, Aquaman has been one of the pillars of DC since his creation, not quite Trinity level (Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman), but also one of their better treated and respected characters (fish jokes aside). Since Aquaman ended with Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry talking his place as the new king of Atlantis.

There are 3 options Warner Bros. and DC have for the sequel:

1. Atlantis makes its presence known to the rest of the world and Arthur indeed tries to be the bridge between the sea and land.

2. A new challenger for the throne makes their presence felt and tries to take the throne from Aquaman.

Or 3. A nation or the nations of the world attack Atlantis in retaliation for dumping the ocean’s garbage and their ships on all of their beaches.

Each one of these ideas have been a major storyline in the DC Rebirth Aquaman series’ first 40 issues. Vol 1. of the series titled The Drowning series Aquaman push for Atlantis to become part of the world’s political stage with push back from both world leaders and the people of Atlantis.

Vol. 4-6 titled Underworld, The Crown Comes Down, and Kingslayer respectively are centered around a new villain named Corum Rath taking back the throne from Aquaman through political channels from those that don’t approve of the new king's agenda. He reverts to the established isolationist philosophy they’ve clung too for centuries, only to then become drunk with power, both figuratively and literally, until it becomes clear that someone who respects tradition while still wanting change and growth is the right leader, that someone being Mera (all hail the queen!).

And lastly the Aquaman/Suicide Squad crossover that saw the U.S. government try and sink Atlantis back into the ocean because they feared a society with magic and technology far more advanced than their own, all in the name of national security and paranoia.
