10 Upcoming Film Blockbusters We've Already Given Up On
9. The Purge: Anarchy
Release Date: July 18, 2014 The Purge, released in 2013, went on to gross an impressive $89 million at the box office - amazing for a movie that cost just $5 million to produce. Unfortunately, it just wasn't very good. Based around the idea that - in the future - all crime is made legal for the duration of one night, as to allow society a means of cathartic "release," the film starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady, and did just about everything it could to sabotage what was an actually interesting premise. At just 85 minutes, it was terribly slight, tedious and ultimately pointless. So... sequel? Upcoming The Purge: Anarchy shifts The Purge into franchise territory, and will focus on completely different characters on a entirely different night, featuring several actors you've never even heard of. So why aren't we willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt, you wonder? Mainly because The Purge: Anarchy has been written and directed by the same person who brought us the last film, James DeMonaco, a man who has already proved he doesn't have what it takes to execute a movie in this vein without resorting to a conveyor belt of tired cliches. The plot this time will focus on survivors who are left out on the streets during the night of the Purge, as opposed to those inside fortified houses, as with the original. Sure, there's a chance this could pave the way for better exploration of the Purge's moral and social implications, and... who are we kidding? It's going to suck.
