8. A Million Ways To Die In The West

Release Date: May 30, 2014 Given that Seth MacFarlane's irreverent comedy about a talking bear that swears, smokes cannabis and hangs out with Mark Wahlberg pulled in a whopping $500 million dollars at the box office, chances are that the studio is hoping for similar success with the awkwardly titled A Million Ways To Die In The West, a sort of western spoof that seems to be a cross between Blazing Saddles and, uh, well... Seth MacFarlane's "trademark" sense of humour? But given its loose premise, which focuses on the plight of a sheep farmer in the Old West, the potential feels slim. Which is to say: a western comedy with a vague plot that seems mostly bent around people being horribly killed in "hilarious" ways, A Million Ways To Die In The West isn't as instantly appealing as Ted - and going by the trailer, nor is going to be anywhere near as funny (which says a lot, given that most of the funny stuff in Ted was already in the trailer). There's an all star cast, of course, with MacFarlane himself set to star in the leading role, alongside big names like Liam Neeson and Charlize Theron. Still, the trailer jokes feel dated, the movie oddly mean-spirited. Is there a place for a western comedy in today's market, especially one that doesn't look like its doing much to break down genre conventions in new, exciting ways? It's hard to get pumped for something that seems so... samey. Especially since MacFarlane's companion novel (of the same name) wasn't particularly good, either. Pass.
