10 Upcoming Film Blockbusters We've Already Given Up On

6. Maleficent

Release Date: May 30, 2014 Maleficent is going to make a lot of money. Whether it's good, bad or downright ugly, there's something undeniably appealing - well, supposedly - about the idea of Angelina Jolie dressing up in an eccentric costume and playing a bad guy (or "bad witch," as it were). Still, going by the footage we've glimpsed so far for this untimely Sleeping Beauty prequel, it already looks as though the filmmakers have verged into that terrible Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland territory - extensive CGI backdrops, CGI main characters, CGI secondary characters... CGI everything! And the trailers thus far don't do much to make Jolie look all that fitting for the role, either - she delivers what few lines she has almost as if she were in rehearsal, saving her voice so she might "do it properly later." And then there's Elle Fanning, who's normally very good, but seems to be struggling with whatever accent she's attempting to do here. All this criticism might seem premature, then, but it's hard to escape the feeling that Maleficent - helmed by special effects artists and first-time director Robert Stromberg - will emphasise bold visuals over good storytelling. Consider that this is coming from Disney, too, who have been very miss and miss lately when it comes to their live-action vehicles (John Carter and The Lone Ranger, we're looking at you), and there's not a lot of hope for this untold story. Then again, there's still a chance it will take a page out of Wicked's book and grant fans a worthwhile flick.
