10 Upcoming Film Sequels And Reboots That Nobody Wants (But Will Make Money Anyway)
2. The Magnificent Seven
What we’re dealing with here is a case of mistaken identity: Antoine Fuqua’s movie calls itself The Magnificent Seven, but that implies a remake of John Sturges’ 1960 western. Judging from the trailer, Fuqua has instead remade 1988's Young Guns, a contemporary-minded western with modern language and sensibilities.
Sturges’ movie starred Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and Yul Bryner, while Young Guns gave us Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen and Dermot Mulroney. Fuqua’s version trades down even further, with a supporting cast that includes Cam Gigandet and Vinnie Jones. There are no Mexicans in the trailer and all the bad guys are white, with Peter Sarsgaard standing in for Eli Wallach.
Rated PG-13 by the MPAA for “historical smoking, some language and suggestive material”, The Generic Seven promises a lot of sound and fury but precious little else. And if they use The House Of The Rising Sun in the movie as they do in the trailer, we are going to have to take Fuqua aside and have words.
