8. Star Wars (Spin-Offs)
Once they acquired Lucasfilm, we all knew Disney would milk the Star Wars franchise for all it's worth. While thats sort of a good thing (were getting Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, who made Star Trek relevant again), it also means nearly half of the products available in Disney Stores are now Star Wars-related. Not content with continuing the Star Wars saga, Disney also announced spin-off films which will presumably be origin stories of beloved characters such as Han Solo and Boba Fett, released in interim years between episodes of the ongoing saga. The threat of over-saturation notwithstanding, this is a bad idea. By their very nature, origin stories are essentially pointless. Case-in-pointthe main problem with the Star Wars prequels wasnt George Lucas terrible dialogue, clunky performances or over-reliance on CGI. It was the fact that everyone already knows the fates of most of the main characters, stripping these films of any tension or suspense. Were simply watching a checklist of events hinted at in the original trilogy, which never really needed further exploration. You also need to ask yourself if you really care about Ford-less Han Solo or the rise of Boba Fett (who may look cool, but isnt exactly a dynamic character).
WHAT COULD SAVE THESE FILMS: This is probably a moot point. Star Wars continues to be a cash cow, and a slew of spin-offs, no matter how redundant, arent likely to change that.
