10 Upcoming Horror Movies That Are Already Doomed
8. The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025)
Michael Chaves' The Conjuring: Last Rites is almost upon us, and it is met with a sigh and a wandering eye.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return as Lorraine and Ed Warren, but the enthusiasm their names once produced is spread thin. And the main issue is that this property has been flogged like a dead horse for a while now, with at least the last three entries in the Conjuring Universe failing to live up to the name of the original film and its sequel.
The 2010s were the real highpoint for the series - a period when a whole spread of new horror franchises were being born and mainstream horror was in its renaissance. Now, the love of horror, or the amount of content available, has not waned this decade, but as the genre has flourished and become ever-more bankable, so has the talent behind the camera and the scope of their aesthetics and narratives. And The Conjuring is beginning to feel a bit old hat.
The tagline - "The Case That Ended It All" - and trailers also heavily imply a significant departure from the true story of the Warrens suggesting that one or both pop their clogs this time. Although most of what is in these films didn't really happen, the departure of the Warrens will rob the franchise of its remaining credibility - something it might not come back from.
