8. It's A Horror Musical - The Bride!
Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! is a wholly unique reimagining of classic horror story Bride of Frankenstein, taking place in 1930s Chicago as a murdered woman (Jessie Buckley) is transformed into a bride for Frankenstein's monster (Christian Bale).
What's received little attention online, however, is that the film is reportedly also a musical, at least in part, with Gyllenhaal's husband Peter Sarsgaard - who also plays a detective in the film - teasing "big dance numbers" in the movie, while also mentioning that Jessie Buckley gets to sing.
That certainly makes this an intriguingly left-field take on classic material, and may well explain why the film has received wildly polarising scores from test audiences so far, enough that Warner Bros. apparently doesn't really know what to do with it.
And so, anyone expecting a straight remix of Bride of Frankenstein should absolutely strap in for something considerably more ambitious, for better or worse.
