10 Upcoming Movie Reboots That Might Actually Work
4. Suicide Squad
In 2016 Suicide Squad came out. What was originally announced as a sequel to the film (slated for 2021), was this year declared to be a reboot. It looks like it won't be a soft reboot either, but a new imagining of the source material with a mostly new cast.
The first film might have gotten mediocre reviews and had a mess of a plot, but it was financially a success. So, it might seem strange to have a universe reset on a story so recent. There is one big reason to feel hopeful: the new director.
Why It Might Work:
James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy series, has experience with tight, humorous, ragtag-team comic book films. He understands how to develop characters that viewers care about and how to tell stories that work as stand-alone films but also fit together for a strong interconnected series.
Arguably, the reason for this being a reboot and not a sequel is because of the director. Warner Bros. was able to scoop him up after Disney's misstep in temporarily firing Gunn (he has been since rehired). That Warner Bros. is willing to give him the freedom to reimagine Suicide Squad as a new story in his own unique style bodes well for the film.
