10 Upcoming Movie Remakes You Should Be More Annoyed About Than Ghostbusters
4. The Six Billion Dollar Man
In Hollywood, existing IP is king. It doesn't matter if that IP is recent, culturally relevant or even all that good, just that it existed at some point in history. That's why every few years we get a modern reimagining of some old TV series that feels archaic - it worked for Mission: Impossible, right?
The thing with Mission: Impossible is that is came out two decades ago, when the show was still a strongly remembered event - it'd be like bringing back Twin Peaks or The X-Files now. You can't repeat the same trick for any old era; people who watched The Lone Ranger on TV as kids aren't the demographic for a $200 million action blockbuster. That's not to say legacy franchises are necessarily weak - we just had seventh entries of Star Wars and Rocky that were both awesome - but that just because something was once this cultural behemoth that it's remained so.
So why are we getting The Six Billion Dollar Man? It's an "Oh, I think I've heard of that name" and with Peter Berg directing Mark Wahlberg you can expect it to be nothing like the original. On the plus side, there's fewer fans to hate on it.
