9. Young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) - Fantastic Beasts 2

Will Smith The Genie
Warner Bros.

Fantastic Beasts 2 will introduce a younger version of Albus Dumbledore, as the famous wizard gears up for his inevitable showdown with Johnny Depp’s Gellert Grindelwald.

Law is of a suitable age to play Dumbledore here, but how can the actor - who's known for being the charming pretty-boy, going so far as to embrace that stereotype in Spy - deliver a wise, world-weary Dumbledore?

Look at Law’s filmography - he’s known for playing twinkly-eyed bachelors, and that’s fine, but it’s hard to imagine him bringing a commanding aura to the screen, something that Dumbledore needs to exude. Law is too... kind. He’s not rough around the edges, and he lacks that powerful, intimidating presence.

Also bear in mind that this Dumbledore is meant to be a younger version of Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore. Jude Law is quite soft-spoken and calm, whereas Gambon is quite brash and intense. The two actors’ personalities don’t seem to match up, and this could make the transition to Dumbledore’s younger days feel unnecessarily jarring.

Plus... isn’t it just hard to picture Law in the beard, robes, and spectacles?
