10 Upcoming Movie Sequels Nobody Wants
9. Mufasa: The Lion King
As a general rule, just about all of Disney's live-action remakes are little more than soulless cash grabs, rebooting wonderful and magical films without the wonder or magic. It's quite ironic that the one exception to this is Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book, while his big follow-up, The Lion King, is arguably the worst example.
The iconic 1994 hit is one of Disney's best ever, yet it was brought into "live-action" 25 years later in an almost beat-for-beat remake that stripped the characters of any real emotion or personality. However, because it came off the back of The Jungle Book's success, and because of its name alone, the movie grossed over $1 billion, which almost automatically greenlit the next chapter in the story, Mufasa: The Lion King.
Based on the trailers, the story will tell of how Scar brought the stray Mufasa into his family, only for the latter to end up on the throne, leaving the former bitter and resentful. This will continue the trend of trying to make villains more empathic and relateable, but sometimes a villain, particularly one as intimidating and evil as Scar, just needs to be a villain.
So, a soulless telling of a story that doesn't need to be told... not much to be excited about here.
