10 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Are A Really Bad Idea
5. The Exorcist
William Friedkin's The Exorcist is one of the greatest horror films of all time, but the two sequels and two prequels that followed? Not so much. The Exorcist III excepted, of course.
But a direct sequel to Friedkin's 1973 original has already been shot, with writer-director David Gordon Green basically attempting to do for The Exorcist what he did for Halloween with its recent legacy sequel trilogy.
The key difference to Green's Halloween movies it that this new Exorcist film won't wipe the two existing sequels from the canon, but tell a modern story in which Chris MacNeil (a returning Ellen Burstyn) is sought to help a father (Leslie Odom Jr.) free his possessed daughter.
But despite the solid cast - also including the great Ann Dowd - it's incredibly easy to be skeptical about this legacy sequel given how quickly Green's Halloween movies nosedived in quality.
The knowledge that Green is also planning to make two additional Exorcist films doesn't exactly quell concerns, and overall it's tough to believe that these new Exorcist movies will be anything beyond generic supernatural horror flicks that use nostalgia as a lazy crutch.
