10 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Are A Really Bad Idea
6. Mufasa: The Lion King
2019's "live-action" remake of The Lion King didn't go over swimmingly with critics, but grossed a stonking $1.66 billion worldwide, ensuring that the House of Mouse quickly began pursuing some sort of a follow-up.
By late 2020, the great Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) was attached to direct a prequel-sequel hybrid focused on a younger Mufasa and Scar, which would adopt the Godfather Part II formula of cutting back between the past and events following the first movie.
Jenkins is already deep into production on the sequel, which will see Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani reprise their roles as Pumbaa, Timon, and Rafiki, while Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. will portray the younger Mufasa and Scar.
Evidently this doesn't feel much like a movie made out of creative necessity, because someone had an interesting story to tell, rather than Disney wanting another sure-thing box office smash.
That a director as talented as Jenkins is spending years of his career working on this is... disappointing, to say the least.
