10 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Are Only Going To Disappoint You
2. The Matrix 4
Would it be unfair to say that The Matrix was the last great movie that the Wachowskis made? Reloaded, Revolutions, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending all feature some phenomenal visuals and detailed world-building, but they all suffer from the same over-indulgence that has characterized the siblings' work since their 1999 classic.
Proving that no big-name franchise is ever truly over, Neo is set to return to our screens next summer for the first time since 2003, with Lana Wachowksi flying solo on a feature-length project for the first time ever. While we don't know any specifics about the plot or even who the majority of the new cast members are playing, The Matrix 4 is already under pressure to atone for the sins of the back-to-back sequels.
The series' opening salvo was a breath of fresh air for action cinema, spawning countless imitators and parodies in the process, but the follow-ups devolved into pseudo-psychological nonsense and an inflated sense of self-importance, which are huge pitfalls that the latest journey down the rabbit hole desperately needs to avoid.
John Wick's Chad Stahelski and David Leitch have confirmed their involvement, which at least means that the fight sequences stand to be top-notch, but action was never the problem with The Matrix. With almost two decades having passed, the fourth installment needs to justify its entire reason to exist with one hell of a story that can instantly draw people back into the world, without feeling like a sequel designed entirely for profit.
