7. Mufasa: The Lion King
Even accepting that 2019's "live-action" remake of The Lion King grossed an eye-watering $1.663 billion worldwide, it feels like humanity collectively forgot about it the moment it left cinemas.
It was a dazzling showcase for modern CGI tech, but a completely hollow, soulless reenactment of the beloved animated original. All the same, its success prompted Disney to announce a prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, with the great Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) set to direct a story focused on the relationship between a younger Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) and Scar (Kelvin Harrison Jr.).
If Disney knows how to do anything, it's wringing every last drop out of a name brand until nobody cares anymore, and honestly, was anyone jonesing for more Lion King content, especially in this style?
Given the downturn in popularity of Disney's industrious slate of remake projects, expect this to gross a mere fraction of what the 2019 Lion King did, because are there really many audience members curious to know more about Mufasa's early years? Curious enough to buy a movie ticket, even? Ehhh.
