10 Upcoming Movies Studios Don't Know How To Market
2. A Wrinkle In Time
An adaptation of a classic novel, directed by a renowned auteur, Ava DuVernay, with the biggest studio in Hollywood backing it up. It's a marketing campaign that practically writes itself, what could possibly go wrong?
Well, Disney could have a John Carter-esque moment of stupidity and completely forget how to effectively market a film.
Between three trailers, the studio has jumped from one approach to the next, with none of them ever garnering the audience attention that a film of this magnitude should. Each and every one of them have made the foolish error of essentially boiling the plot of the novel down to 'light vs. dark', a cliche that we've seen a thousand times before. But each trailer has gotten progressively lazier with its depiction of the film.
The biggest offender is the final trailer that was recently released, in which Disney decides to slap on a 'from the studio that brought you Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book' tag. What does that have to do with anything, Disney? If anything, you should be slapping 'from the studio that just brought you Black Panther' on there. If you're going to get that desperate, at least that film is far more relevant to this one and more likely to get butts in the seats
Disney has a vital and important film on their hands here, they just don't have a clue how to sell it.
