Martin Scorsese's next feature will reunite him with frequent collaborators Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, and will see the acclaimed director return to a favourite genre - crime - something he hasn't done since 2006's The Departed.

And yes, a lot of viewers technically won't have to spend any money on The Irishman, since it's debuting on Netflix in 2019. But this is the type of movie that you buy a subscription for, and there will absolutely be a division of people signing up for the streaming service just to check this one out.

The list of reasons why The Irishman demands a watch are almost too many to scribe: it's the first Scorsese/Pesci/De Niro movie since 1995, and the trio always produces gold; it also stars vets like Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel; it will make use of cutting-edge de-aging tech to make many of its principal cast members look 30 years younger; and, crucially, Scorsese excels in the crime space, with The Departed, Casino and Goodfellas finding the director at the peak of his game.

You know you're going to watch it - you don't even have to leave the house, so no excuses!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
