How It Lost Fans

Despite grossing an astonishing $2.7 billion worldwide in late 2009 and early 2010, Avatar has become the subject of a lot of hate in the years since.

For some reason, it's now cool to bash it, with skeptics pointing out how it "stole" its plot from Dances With Wolves (as though no movie in history has ever contained similarities to another), and how it was only a success because of its visuals.

As a result, it feels as though the online film community is hoping Avatar 2 will fail, just so it can claim that the first film was a fluke, and that the haters were right all along.

How It's Trying To Win Them Back

The thing about James Cameron is that he clearly doesn't care what these sections of the fandom think. People have been doubting him for decades, and yet - as a director - he's managed to deliver hit after hit after hit.

He won't exactly be sat at home reading the negative online comments and thinking "oh bugger, I better go out of my way to please these people with Avatar 2!" - instead, he'll just make the movie he's had in his head for the past decade, which, given his track record, will be another strong effort.

And that's all he can really do to get the doubters back onboard: make a fantastic movie, and let it speak for itself.
