How It Lost Fans

The Saw franchise has been slowly losing supporters for over a decade, with each sequel failing to capture the brilliance of the original film, and generally just not being very good movies to boot.

The most recent entry, Jigsaw, might even be the worst one yet, and earned one of the lowest box-office grosses in the series for its troubles. An attempt to reinvigorate the brand, it clearly didn't work, and felt like another "been there, done that" movie to add to the huge pile of them that had been building up since Saw II.

To put it succinctly, Jigsaw killed what little excitement there was left surrounding Saw, and left the future of the series in doubt.

How It's Trying To Win Them Back

For years, the Saw franchise has needed an injection of fresh energy, some new ideas, a completely new creative team - just something that fans can look at and go "okay, this might be the one", instead of just another sequel with a bunch of gore and a predictable twist at the end.

And fortunately, that's exactly what the upcoming ninth instalment is doing. It's based on a story by comedian Chris Rock, which, while a pretty odd choice, is at least a daring and risky move, an indicator that Lionsgate is finally trying something new with the franchise. At the very, very least, it's an intriguing prospect.

Plus, with Samuel L. Jackson playing the lead, there's a level of prestige and scale about this entry that has never been present before, and the word is that Saw 9 will finally be the one that shakes the franchise's tired formula on its head.
