The Original Pitch

Jigsaw is one of the worst films in the Saw franchise, but it did phenomenally well at the box-office and that made another film inevitable. And sure enough, in early 2018, we learned that a ninth film in the series was being scripted by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, who had just written Jigsaw.

Based on that limited amount of information, it was hard to get excited for what was shaping up to be "another Saw movie", especially since the series hadn't really tried anything new or exciting since... well, since it started in 2004. And with the only filmmakers announced at the time being the writers of Jigsaw (along with Sorority Row and Piranha 3D), things looked pretty drab, to say the least.

How It's Been Saved

Shockingly, Saw 9 is now shaping up to be something pretty special.

Yes, those Jigsaw writers are still onboard, but they're working off a story idea from Chris Rock, which has been touted as a reinvigoration of the brand. Along with that, series creators and horror aficionados James Wan and Leigh Whannell are returning as executive producers, which means that they're at least supportive of Rock's idea.

Chris Rock doing Saw isn't something anybody expected or asked for, but comedians doing horror has churned out some great results lately (Jordan Peele's Get Out/Us, and Danny McBride's Halloween 2018 script), so, at the very least, Saw 9 should be the most refreshing instalment in the series to date.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
