10 Upcoming Movies That Have Already Pissed Everyone Off

6. Live Action Mulan Reboot

Charlies Angels
Disney

We warned you Lady & the Tramp wouldn't be alone on this list. Mulan is, of course, the animated 1998 movie about a Chinese heroine who disguises herself as a man and saves China from invading Huns. But when part of the script for Disney's remake leaked fans were about to gird on their armor and go over the Disney wall in protest.

The major issue?

It's Disney, so of course the issue was whitewashing. Worse than the inclusion of white American Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders (replacing the snobby, cruel Prince Achmed from the original film) as a rival suitor for Jasmin's hand in the recently released Aladdin. Mulan actually appeared to be going down the white savior trope by including a white male lead alongside Mulan. Because we all know how well Matt Damon's The Great Wall weathered a similar storm, right?

The cast now seems to be entirely of Asian descent. Although the inclusion of two South Asian/Indian characters, the only 'brown' characters in the movie, as con-men still smacks of 'browning out the villains'. There also still seem to be some of the usual concerns regarding remakes about changes to the story. For instance the removal of the love interest, Shang, from the original animated film and his role being split between a rival soldier and a new character who is the army's commander is a touchy subject for fans.
