10 Upcoming Movies That Have Cast Completely The Wrong Person
2. Idris Elba - Star Trek Beyond
That's right: this list contains not one, but two Idris Elba casting decisions of a questionable kind (sorry, Idris: it's nothing personal - you're fantastic in other stuff!). That said, this is an odd instance of casting if there ever was one. In Star Trek Beyond, then, the actor appears set to play an alien-faced villain named Kroll who - according to the trailers for the movie - is one very angry dude. Thing is, you can't tell that it's Idris Elba underneath all the prosthetics; Kroll could be just about anyone. Which means that, really, it seems like Elba has been selected for a role in which you won't know that it's even him. It's a little off, you have to admit, despite the fact that the actor has talked about Kroll being "ground breaking." As it stands, he looks a bit dated, to be honest; like something you'd find in a sci-fi B-movie from the '70s. Granted, the whole thing could reveal itself to be total and utter genius and this writer will eat his words, but it's difficult to envision that happening. Who, then? You wonder why the filmmakers didn't get Andy Serkis to motion picture something extraordinary, or hire somebody with a super recognisable voice to play Kroll. Elba is an actor you hire on the basis of what he looks like, surely? His physical appearance and acting ability are his greatest assets. His voice is good, yeah, but it's not exactly Jeremy Irons.
