10 Upcoming Movies That Have Cast Completely The Wrong Person
3. Patrick Dempsey - Bridget Jones's Baby
If you've seen TV's medial drama Grey's Anatomy, chances are you'll be familiar with Patrick Dempsey; he's that gorgeous all-American type - the kind of guy that middle-aged women endlessly fantasise about (probably). He's not a particularly versatile actor, all things considered, but Dempsey's job normally just involves standing there and looking pretty. Dempsey has been cast as the alternate love interest character, Jack Qwant, in the upcoming sequel to Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, which will pit him against Colin Firth's Mark Darcy as they battle for an older Renee Zellweger's affection. He's rumoured to be playing a billionaire, by the way - talk about your unbelievable scenarios, huh? The problem with Dempsey, however, exists whichever way they choose to play the character: if Bridget Jones's Baby wants to make him into a Hugh Grant replacement type (i.e. an asshole) nobody is going to buy it; Dempsey is too nice and would be unconvincing in the role. If they make him a nice guy, true to Dempsey tradition, well... that's just boring, isn't it? Who wants to see a film about a woman choosing between two nice guys? Basically, Patrick Dempsey offers nothing substantial as a choice of actor; we've seen a charming American guy many times before, and he won't play a convincing jerk, either. Who, then? Somebody like Robert Downey Jr. would have been a lot more interesting than your standard romantic comedy type - not to mention he's capable of wit and charisma like nobody else in the movie business, whilst still retaining all those irresistibly idiosyncratic qualities.
