10 Upcoming Movies That Will (Probably) Tease Cinematic Universes
6. The Invisible Man
It was a sad day when The Mummy opened in theatres back in 2017. The Tom Cruise led reboot, starring Sofia Boutelle as the titular character, was a crushing defeat for Universal Studios both with audiences and critics. The film, which was intended to kick-off the Dark Universe - a modern style cinematic universe of classic monster properties - ended up being nominated for eight Razzie awards, with Tom Cruise even winning the award for Worst Actor.
The biggest problem was unanimously cited as the script's constant desire to be exposition for this Dark Universe, rather than propping The Mummy as a great film in its own right. After taking a break from the franchise, Universal is going to try again in 2020 with the Invisible Man, starring Elisabeth Moss.
The hope is that the film is able to learn from the mistakes of The Mummy and focus on it being its own movie, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to shy away all together. The Invisible Man will inevitably tease the shared universe once again with a post-credit scene, featuring Russell Crowe's Dr. Jekyll enlisting The Invisible Man into the Monsters Initiative (probably).
