Free Guy casts Ryan Reynolds as Guy, a non-player character (NPC) residing within an open-world video game called Free City.
After the code is altered, Guy becomes aware of the fact he's living inside a game, and is forced to become a hero in order to prevent the game's creators from closing it down.
As a giddy mash-up of The Lego Movie and The Matrix, this has a ton of potential to be a self-aware celebration and skewering of video games. In the age of the open-world game, what better through-line to try and capture the general public's imagination?
And with an ensemble cast including Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Taika Waititi, and Lil Rey Howery, Reynolds will have plenty of comedic talent to back up his expected motormouth shtick.
