Budget: $120 million

Francis Ford Coppola's long-awaited passion project Megalopolis is an epic sci-fi drama that he's been attempting to get made for more than 40 years. 

And while a $120 million budget might not sound particularly outrageous for a lavish tentpole from one of the greatest directors of all time, it's worth knowing that Coppola self-funded the entire production by selling off a significant chunk of his wine empire.

As even a director as revered as Coppola couldn't get this project bankrolled through conventional channels, it speaks to how little commercial viability the concept has - centered around a man (Adam Driver) attempting to rebuild a destroyed metropolis in the wake of a catastrophe.

And so, one can only hope that Coppola willingly set his own money on fire simply in order to realise a dream project almost a half-century in the making, as there's very little chance that Megalopolis grosses the $300 million it needs in order to be a hit.

All the same, it's tough not to respect the legendary filmmaker taking such a wild swing with his own coffers. 

Here's to hoping that if it can't be a box office smash, it's at least a worthy swan song for the man behind so many indellible classics.
