10 Upcoming Movies With INSANE Budgets
5. Heat 2 ($170 Million)
Michael Mann's Heat remains one of the most acclaimed crime thrillers of the 1990s, and against a $60 million budget grossed $187.4 million globally, while remaining a supremely popular genre fixture over the last 30 years.
Mann is currently gearing up to make a sequel based on his own acclaimed 2022 novel, with Adam Driver and Austin Butler rumoured to star.
Mann submitted the first draft of his screenplay to Warner Bros. back in March, though the production's budget has since become a major sticking point.
The studio balked at Mann's initial $200 million ask for the film, which has prompted Mann to try and get it done for "just" $170 million.
Even that's looking too steep for Warner Bros., though, considering it would require a global gross of around $425 million to be deemed profitable.
However, Warner is reportedly open to partnering with another studio on the project, and so Mann currently has the script sent out to Apple in the hope they'll come aboard as a co-financier.
Even accepting that Apple basically has more money than God and has funded their fair share of acclaimed-but-unprofitable films in recent years, a $170 million heist flick without any sort of extra hook - say, superheroes or sci-fi - is a gargantuan request of any studio.
It's easy to see why Warner Bros. is nervous, but hopefully this won't prevent Mann's long-percolating sequel from finally getting made.
