4. The Last Duel

The Last Duel sounds like it will either be a major winner at the Academy Awards, or the next big thing in HMV's bargain bins. Either way, it's going to be very interesting to see how it turns out.

Adapted from the book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France, Ridley Scott's upcoming thriller pits Matt Damon against Adam Driver, best friends who come to blows when Jean de Carrouges (Damon) accuses Jacques Le Gris (Driver) of raping his wife.

There's an attempt to resolve the incident formally, but this being 14th century France, things soon turn violent, and the two men must instead fight in a duel to the death. Oh, and if Damon loses, his wife will be burned at the stake. Ah, the legal system!

The concept of a movie that is basically one long trial by combat sounds awesome as hell, especially when you factor in the Hollywood budget and the incredible level of talent involved.

And then, getting to see Damon and Driver go into full-on meltdown mode while hacking each other to death should make for some fantastic meme material, but hopefully, the movie is less silly, and more "oh my god this is brutal and gritty and dramatic and just give it all the Oscars already!"

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
