All but disappearing from the Hollywood sphere by the end of the 2010s, Brendan Fraser's surprise casting in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale caught many a movie fan off-guard in early 2021.

The Mummy and George of the Jungle star hadn't been entirely inactive by any means, most notably appearing in Doom Patrol as Robotman. But it'd been an age since anyone had taken a chance on the one-time blockbuster movie star on the big-screen, and the nature of Aronofsky's latest barmy project was also enough to turn many a head.

The 2000s heartthrob would be playing the role of a 600lb middle-aged man trying to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter, with the two growing apart after Fraser's Charlie ran away with his lover who ultimately passed away; an event that led to Charlie binge eating out of guilt.

And if the film's recent reception at the Venice Film Festival was anything to go by, with The Whale earning a 6-minute standing ovation, the project that Fraser wanted to "reintroduce" him has done precisely that, seemingly setting in motion a transformative comeback that next to nobody had on their 2022 big-screen bingo card.
