10 Upcoming Movies You Didn't Know Were Based On Books
2. Mr. Holmes
A new movie based on the Arthur Conan Doyle novels, right? Not quite. Sherlock Holmes is one of the literature's most famous and intriguing characters, which is presumably what spurred novelist Mitch Cullin towards writing his own Holmes book, A Slick Trick Of The Mind, which hones in on a 93-year-old Sherlock as he reflects on his life and career - and begins to struggle with the slow deterioration of his once unrivalled brain. The upcoming adaptation of Cullin's 2005 book has been retitled to the more marketable "Mr. Holmes," which might have caused a bit of confusion amongst those wondering what Mr. Holmes was, exactly, how it related to the iconic character, and what happened to the film version of A Slick Trick Of The Mind that was apparently in the works. Nothing to fear: this is it. Starring the ever wonderful Ian McKellen as the hero of the title, Mr. Holmes is directed by Bill Condon (the man behind Dreamgirls and a bunch of the Twilight movies) and also features talented individuals such as Laura Linney and Roger Allam in supporting roles. Here's hoping that, like the book, it's something of a doozy.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
