4. I Am Mother

I Am Mother
Netflix

The Pitch: A teenage girl (Clara Rugaard) is raised underground by a robotic "mother" (Rose Byrne) tasked with re-populating the world following an extinction event above ground. However, the arrival of a blood-soaked woman (Hilary Swank) casts doubt on the robot's mission, and so the girl starts to question everything she knows.

If that set-up isn't weird enough, I Am Mother is a most bizarre and unlikely collision of talents and circumstances - it's director Grant Sputore's feature debut, working from an acclaimed script that ended up on the 2016 Black List of most-liked screenplays, with a prop robot built by special effects wizards Weta Workshop.

And to reiterate, it co-stars Rose Byrne as the voice of a robot, and Oscar-winner Hilary Swank as a viscera-coated woman.

I Am Mother premiered at Sundance earlier this year to strong reviews, largely praising the offbeat writing, direction and performances across the board. Netflix has since acquired it for international distribution, with a release date set for June 7.
