3. Paradise Hills

Paradise Hills Emma Roberts
Nostromo Pictures

The Pitch: Uma (Emma Roberts) wakes up in Paradise Hills, a reform school for wayward young women situated on a remote Mediterranean island and overseen by the villainous Duchess (Milla Jovovich). It doesn't take long before Uma and her new friends discover that the facility conceals some grim secrets.

The directorial debut of Spanish filmmaker Alice Waddington, Paradise Hills looks pretty damn bonkers, taking a quartet of on-the-rise actresses (Eiza González, Awkwafina and Danielle Macdonald, in addition to Roberts), dressing them up in ridiculous corsets and having them smash the patriarchy to bits over the course of 95 minutes.

Reviews have been divisive since its Sundance premiere, but there has been consistent praise for its strong visuals, alluring costumes and intriguing dystopian vision.

Several reviews have referred to it as a sort-of punk-rock remix of The Handmaid's Tale, which is really all that needs to be said. Sold.
