10 Upcoming Netflix Originals That Could Win Oscars
4. Roma
Release Date: December 14
The Buzz: By far the most "serious" 2018 awards contender on this list, Roma is Alfonso Cuarón's first film since 2013's Gravity, though sees the two-time Oscar winner returning to a far more subdued and stripped-down type of dramatic feature.
The movie, which will be presented in black-and-white, "chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s" and stars an all-Mexican cast.
While monochrome cinematography and unknown casts don't often fly high with the Academy, the industry buzz on this thing is off-the-charts, with the early word suggesting that Cuarón serves up a unique, visually stunning spin on a seemingly typical family drama.
It's already ranking incredibly high on countless Best Picture prediction lists, and it's certainly Netflix's strongest shot at an actual Best Picture win to date.
Roma premieres at Venice in September and will play numerous other festivals around the world before heading to streaming shortly before Christmas.
