10 Upcoming Non-English Language Films To Look Out For In 2023
2. Let The River Flow
The Sámi people are one of the Russian-speaking world's smallest minorities. Best known as reindeer farmers, only about 80,000 of them still exist today.
Probably because Santa Claus keeps stealing their livelihood. We know what you're up to, Kris Kringle!
They are also the subject of the Norwegian film Let The River Flow, which recently won the audience award at the Tromsø International Film Festival. It's about a young Sámi girl who moves to a town in Northern Norway, attempting to hide her heritage from those around her.
When she discovers a plan to dam a local river, she joins the locals in their fight to keep the body of water free, learning to accept herself in the process.
It's based on a real-life set of protests that took place around the Atla river in the late '70s and early '80s. This clearly resonated with its Scandinavian audience, and German outlet Beta will be hoping it does the same with audiences around the world.
They've just snapped up the distribution rights to Let The River Flow, so expect to see it crop up in locations across Europe in the near future.
