10 Upcoming Remakes That Might Actually Be Great
6. The Naked Gun
The Naked Gun films are so incredibly iconic, and there's simply no duplicating the deadpan brilliance of Leslie Nielsen's central performance that it'd seem ridiculous to even try. And so, while the mere announcement of a Naked Gun remake will get many fans' hackles up, it does at least have an inspired pairing of filmmaker and lead actor to chew over.
The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer, who previously helmed cult comedy classics Hot Rod, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, will direct, while the Nielsen role will be played by Liam Neeson.
While Neeson reinvented himself as an action hero in the late 2000s, he's also proven himself a surprisingly versatile supporting player in a bevy of studio comedies, including Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, The Lego Movie, A Million Ways to Die in the West, and Ted 2.
One can certainly appreciate how Neeson's gruffness could lend itself exceedingly well to a weirdo deadpan comedy, and if that's not enough, its enticingly odd ensemble cast includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, CCH Pounder, Busta Rhymes, and even WWE superstar Cody Rhodes.
