10 Upcoming Remakes That Might Actually Be Great

5. The Bride!

Though there are many, many screen adaptations of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the 1935 spin-off Bride of Frankenstein remains a singular entity - at least until next year.

While remaking such an iconic genre classic will give some a moment for pause, it's worth considering the pedigree behind this new take. Firstly, Maggie Gyllenhaal will serve as writer-director of The Bride!, hot off the success of her acclaimed 2021 directorial debut The Lost Daughter.

Moreover, the cast for this thing is stacked deep, with Jessie Buckley playing Frankenstein's bride, while Christian Bale will portray Frank himself, and the rest of the ensemble is filled out by Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, John Magaro, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Intriguingly, the film is reported to feature "big dance numbers" and is armed with a budget over the $100 million mark, which should ensure this is quite the lavish departure from its almost century-old predecessor. James Whale's original film is absolutely indelible, but given that the Bride of Frankenstein story is far from played out, it's tough to be too skeptical about this remake.
