10 Upcoming Sequels Nobody Asked For (That Might Be Great)
8. Top Gun: Maverick
Now, let's be clear, a Top Gun sequel in the 90s would have been really welcome, given the fact that Tom Cruise was still his boyish, charming, shark-smile self that he'd been for Maverick. And it would be interesting to see what his flyboy had done with his actual career out of sky school. Cut to 2019 and it's less of an easy sell.
Sure, Cruise still has that same insistence in his smile and his valiant commitment to doing his own stunts even as he creeps towards his pensionable age is remarkable, but Maverick was a young gun and the world has moved on from the idea of ace flyers being the pinnacle of masculinity. More of the volleyball sequences would probably break Twitter, though, to be fair.
But the sequel isn't just about Cruise's Maverick living the same dream - it's a legacy movie about a second generation and that's not a role Cruise has ever explored yet. His whole dynamic is being eternal, so the idea of seeing him dealing with a Rocky-like threat of extinction and replacement actually makes Maverick sound very intriguing.
