10 "Upcoming" Sequels You Didn't Know Had Been Shelved
9. The Mortal Instruments: City Of Ashes
It's A Sequel To: The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones (2013) The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones was a failed attempt to start up a young adult-inclined franchise with Hunger Games-type appeal. That didn't happen, of course, because most people reading this list are probably asking: "What the heck is The Mortal Instruments?" The movie, based on the fantasy book series of the same name, starred a bunch of relative unknowns, was lambasted upon release (it holds a mere 12% on Rotten Tomatoes) and failed to pull in much at the box office. The sequel, City Of Ashes, was supposed to start production in 2013, but that never happened. The director of the first film, one Harald Zwart, was the last person to speak up about the sequel in 2014, claiming he'd have no involvement: "The studio is still certain that they will make this movie, but its not me who directs it. I will focus on other projects in the future. Shadowhunters was a great experience and it gave me a good window to show off." It's been a year and no word, so consider this bad boy unofficially shelved (though there was a rumour of a TV adaptation, which also looks to have been shelved - what luck!).
