10 "Upcoming" Sequels You Didn't Know Had Been Shelved

8. The Girl Who Played With Fire

It's A Sequel To: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was one of the best movies of 2011; a brilliantly dark, modern noir thriller starring Rooney Mara in a wonderfully transformative performance. And given that the film was based on the first book in an acclaimed trilogy, the world assumed that two further pictures would follow. But they didn't. And then for a long while, things went totally silent and nobody seemed to know what was happening. During the controversy that was the Sony Pictures hack, leaked emails revealed that Rooney Mara was just as confused; she'd even emailed the head of the studio, Amy Pascal, asking whether the sequel would ever get made. Then, earlier this year, Mara said the following in an interview: "I don€™t think it€™s going to happen. I€™m sad never to do it again, but it just doesn€™t seem like it€™s in the cards." Which means that - as far as Sony are concerned, anyway - this project doesn't seem like much of a priority. David Fincher seems to have moved on; Amy Pascal is gone. Not cancelled, exactly, then, but it sure as hell doesn't look to be happening any time soon.
