10 "Upcoming" Sequels You Didn't Know Had Been Shelved
7. Dredd 2
It's A Sequel To: Dredd (2012) Dredd was one of the biggest and best surprises of 2012. Written by novelist and screenwriter Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later...), it righted all the wrongs of the very, very awful 1995 version starring Sylvester Stallone, content to be a balls to wall action schlock fest of the very highest order, with a great performance from Karl Urban. Despite claims that a sequel was, in fact, in the works, cancelled, and then proposed as a TV series, screenwriter Alex Garland recently spoke out regarding the potential follow-up, claiming that - after a long period of "will they/won't they?" - it had been shelved:
"There isn't, as far as I can tell, going to be a Dredd sequel. The basic mechanics of film financing say that if you make a film that loses a ton of money, you're not going to get a sequel. And that's basically what happened."
Still, that doesn't mean that the project has been outright cancelled. For now, though, it seems like a safe bet to file Dredd 2 under the section marked "shelved."
