10 Upcoming Video Game Movies That Absolutely Nobody Asked For
4. Madden
A movie based on a video game based on a sport. The only conceivable way this can get more convoluted is if, after that movie comes out, they release a tie-in video game based on the movie based on the video game based on the sport. EAs pitch for a Madden movie sounds like an April Fool's joke or a Reddit prank, but they were dead serious: in a nutshell, the film will be the sports comedy equivalent of Final Destination. The film focuses on the "Madden Curse" which, contrary to popular belief, is not the mysterious force that drives otherwise sane people to buy the same damn game every year. No, its a long-standing joke/superstition that NFL players who appear on the cover of the annual video game release are struck down with debilitating injuries. And it's creepily consistent, taking out almost every single player who's appeared on the cover since 1999. Madden Curse: The Movie sees a former NFL champion come out of retirement, only to freak out when he finds himself on the cover of that years Madden game. It's definitely a creative way to squeeze a movie out of a story-less property, but drawing attention to a reason to not partner with your company doesn't make a lot of business sense. While (hopefully) no reasonable business person makes huge decisions based on an internet-grade conspiracy theory, it's rumoured that at least one superstitious player has turned down the cover appearance. The big question, of course, is who would be willing to risk appearing on the movie posters and DVD cover?
