10 VHS Tapes That Totally Lied To You

4. Masters Of The Universe (1987)

'Masters of the Universe' is a flawed masterpiece. From a He-Man fan’s perspective, there is the lack of Orko, Prince Adam, Battle-Cat, and the fact that the majority of the movie does not take place on Eternia, instead taking place in “Generic Town, USA”.

The sleeve shows He-Man and Skeletor looking fantastic, badass villains across the bottom, the fight taking place on the back. What’s disappointing is the box avoids telling you about the amount of screen time that is taken up by Julie (a young Courteney Cox) and Kevin, and Kevin’s upcoming performance at the school dance, where he’ll be playing keyboards. That'll keep young He-Man fans entertained, right? It starts promising, looking like a combination of ‘Superman’ and ‘Star Wars’; if only they didn’t change direction so quickly. Teen romance is not what the cover art promises.

It is worth noting that this appears to be Gary Goddard’s directorial debut after working as a producer, and you have to wonder what made Cannon trust him to direct such a big project that had huge financial implications.
