10 Video Game Movies Better Than Warcraft

4. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

Though The Spirits Within has almost nothing to do with its video game namesake and bombed at the box office (making just $85.1 million against a $137 million budget), it is the best-reviewed video game movie to date (rocking a cool 44% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an undeniable visual masterpiece.

Back in 2001, The Spirits Within was a jaw-dropping benchmark of lifelike CGI, and crowbarred open the discussion that physical actors could one day be put out of a job by computers.

On its own terms, while the plot is totally forgettable, it works as a visual spectacle first and foremost, and absolutely makes the most of its huge budget.

Why It's Better Than Warcraft: Though its narrative is certainly no more interesting or better-executed than Warcraft's, the toolbox of big-budget technology is simply put to more impressive and consistent use, whereas in Warcraft, it ends up feeling wildly skittish and even cheap at times. You certainly can't say that about The Spirits Within.
