10 Video Nasties That Became Horror Classics
6. Martin
A rare non-zombie outing for the late, great George A.
Romero, Martin tells the tale of its titular protagonist – a troubled, working
class young man stuck in an economically depressed suburban town who may or may
not be a vampire but certainly thinks he is and goes around killing people and
drinking their blood just as a vampire would.
But like many of Romero’s films, it’s not just about the bogeymen be they zombies or vampires. Martin is a bleak and ultimately saddening of an alienated youth reacting to the stagnation and societal breakdown of his poverty-ridden environs.
You can almost see the video nasty campaign’s point … almost. God forbid the disaffected youth of Thatcher’s Britain take a leaf out of Martin’s book and start offing their neighbours vampire-style. Of course, there was no spate of vampire-like killings in the UK and today Martin is recognised as one of Romero’s greatest underrated masterpieces.
