10 Viral Outbreak Movies To Watch While In Quarantine
4. Contagion
It really does not get more on-the-nose than this one. You’d be excused for thinking that 2011’s Contagion was somehow pitched, filmed and released over the last two weeks. If you thought The Simpsons were eerily accurate when it came to predicting large-scale global events, buckle the f**k up.
Contagion covers the spread of a deadly virus, which produces flu-like symptoms, as it travels around the globe. The virus begins in China and makes its way to the US and beyond when the first confirmed case is a woman travelling home from a business trip in Hong Kong.
As the disease continues to infect people, countries go into lockdown, anyone infected or who has come into contact with the infected has to go into isolation, gym halls and aircraft hangars are used as makeshift hospitals, and the CDC races against time to create a vaccine.
Oh, and it all originates from a bad batch of bat meat too. (Really.)
What we can take from this, other than the fact that this film confirms the existence of either time-travel or psychic abilities, is to take the guidelines about social-distancing seriously. In the film, it’s only once lockdown is in effect that a vaccine is properly distributed to the public.
