10 Ways To Get Stupidly Rich (That We Learnt From Movies)

5. Bump Off Your Wife For The Insurance Money - Double Indemnity

If you're the kind of person who watches Indecent Proposal and thinks that prostituting your wife out to a billionaire for $1 million is a tad excessive, then bumping off your spouse so that you can cash in on the insurance policy is likely to be one step too far. Insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred McMurray) finds himself caught up in such a murderous plot in Double Indemnity, Billy Wilder's 1944 film noir masterpiece also starring Barbara Stanwyck as the wife hatching the nefarious plot. Despite the best laid plans, things don't pan out quite how they expect things - it's a cautionary tale about the allure of femme fatales which would make any sensible person think twice about carrying out such a plan themselves. Based on a real life murder case which took place in New York, it didn't take the authorities long to figure out who the culprits were - the wife, a woman called Ruth Snyder, found international fame in the most dreadful of circumstances, with the front page picture of her execution in the electric chair renowned as the most famous news photograph of the 1920s.
